Koi fish seems to be a popular theme for a slot machine at this time of the year – or could it be the Asian theme that’s popular among developers?
I wouldn’t know – but after Microgaming’s Lucky Twins and NetEnt’s Koi Princess here is another Asian theme slot released by a major developer: Playtech’s Nian Nian You Yu.
For the European eye Nian Nian You Yu might seem a bit over-decorated, with all its dragons, lanterns and colors. The game’s title translates to “there’s some fish every year”, and is also the name of a fish meal served by most Chinese families around the Chinese New Year. The game has five reels, three rows and 9 win lines, and goes easy on special features or side games.
All of the symbols on the game’s reels are China-related. They depict dragon masks, various dishes, firecrackers, lanterns and cherry blossoms, with the Koi fish acting as a Wild symbol in the game. The Nian Nian You Yu logo acts as a scatter, triggering the game’s bonus feature.
The Nian Nian You Yu video slot comes with a four-tier progressive jackpot. The jackpot game is triggered randomly with any spin at any bet amount (although, as you might expect, playing at higher stakes increases the chances for a bonus game to be triggered).
When this happens, the players are taken to the Dragon Jackpot game, similar to a Wheel of Fortune, with wheel segments bearing different Dragon symbols with different colors (according to the color of the jackpot counter on the top of the screen).
Whenever a player gets to the Dragon Wheel, one of the four jackpots is guaranteed to be won – the game goes on until the player gathers three identical Dragon symbols corresponding to a jackpot.
